the signal/noise around changes in the industry have not been great, though to be fair the story is fairly complex. internet exchanges and meetup rooms are great, we should have more of them! they often end up in urban downtowns, lots of routers and fiber, not much power density

until a few years ago, the generic data center footprint could have been relatively fixed! improvements in efficiency meant you got more value (social and economic) out of the same budget of watts, sqft, or budget. LLM resource consumption has totally broken that dynamic

to cross-reference, Seattle is planning a pause on all new data centers (I haven't seen how they intend to define that) within the city proper. driven by news of 5 proposed facilities totaling 369 MW in the area (I would guess kent/renton?). that would be 19x Westin Buildings of power equivalent

another example is the Westin Building. I thought it mostly hosted a floor of Seattle Internet Exchange, and a bit of other colo. but that way undersells it: 34 floors, 19 MW, 300k / 386k sqft. not a hyperscaler, but pretty chonky. (this was also originally just a regular office building)
